Wondering how to tan with sunscreen? It is possible and safer. Rysun Biotechnology explains the SPF sweet spot, application timing, and how our 50-step quality control protects your skin while you glow.
How to Tan With Sunscreen? The Smart Way to Glow
Introduction
In the world of skincare, there is often a conflict between "getting a tan" and "staying safe." When our founder, Ivy Wong, established Guangzhou Rysun Biotechnology in 2014, she aimed to resolve the "inconsistent quality" in the market that forced consumers to choose between burning for a tan or staying ghost-white for safety.
Guided by Swiss anti-aging experts, we know that UV exposure accelerates aging. However, we also know that consumers desire a healthy glow. The question is: How to tan with sunscreen safely?
The answer lies in patience and high-quality formulation. Backed by our Research Institute and 253 intellectual properties, here is the Rysun guide to getting color without the burn.

1. Understand that Sunscreen is a Filter, Not a Wall
To tan with sunscreen, you must realize that no SPF blocks 100% of rays.
- The Math: SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays. The remaining 3% still penetrates your skin.
- The Melanin Response: For most skin types, that 3% is enough to trigger melanin production (tanning) over time.
- The Rysun Standard: We recommend using SPF 30 to SPF 50. This allows you to stay in the sun longer without burning. A burn causes peeling, which destroys your tan. By preventing the burn, Rysun’s Broad-Spectrum formulas help you keep your glow longer.
2. Choose the Right "Broad Spectrum" Formula
If you want to tan, you need to filter the burning rays (UVB) while managing the tanning rays (UVA).
- The Science: UVA rays are responsible for tanning (and aging).
- The Strategy: Use a Rysun-manufactured Broad Spectrum sunscreen. Our formulations are tested to ensure they don't block all UVA light (unless specified as PA++++), allowing for a gradual, golden color development while shielding you from the rapid DNA damage that causes redness.
3. Apply 20 Minutes Before Exposure
Timing is everything.
- The Mistake: Applying sunscreen once you are already at the beach.
- The Fix: Apply it 20 minutes before going outside. This allows the film-forming polymers (a key part of our 105 product patterns) to set on the skin.
- Why it helps you tan: An even layer ensures an even tan. If you apply it late or unevenly, you get patchy burns and streaks.
4. Keep Moving and Hydrate
Static tanning leads to burning.
- Movement: Rotating your body ensures even exposure and prevents one area from getting that 3% UV dosage for too long.
- Hydration: Tanning dries out the skin. Dry skin reflects UV rays and looks dull.
- Rysun’s Practical Solutions: Our sunscreens are often infused with Hyaluronic Acid or Squalane. This keeps the skin hydrated, which not only protects the barrier but actually helps the skin tan more evenly and hold the color longer.
5. The "Tan-Enhancing" Ingredient (For Brand Owners)
Rysun partners with 700+ brands globally. For clients who specifically want "Tanning Sunscreens," our Research Institute formulates with safe boosters.
- Tyrosine & Peptide Complexes: We can add ingredients that stimulate melanin production naturally.
- The Benefit: This allows the user to get a deeper tan with less time in the sun, reducing overall radiation exposure.
The Rysun Safety Warning
As a company rooted in Swiss anti-aging expertise, we must be clear: There is no such thing as a completely healthy UV tan. Tanning is your skin's reaction to injury. However, if you are going to tan, doing it with sunscreen is infinitely safer than doing it without.
Our 50 inspection procedures ensure that when you use a Rysun product, the SPF rating is accurate, protecting you from the severe burns that lead to long-term health issues.
FAQs
Q1: Will SPF 50 stop me from tanning completely?
A: Not completely, but it will be very slow. SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays. If you want a slight glow, it might take weeks of incidental exposure. For a faster (but riskier) tan, most people use SPF 30.
Q2: Can I use tanning oil over my sunscreen?
A: We do not recommend layering oil over sunscreen. Oils can degrade the sunscreen film and magnify UV rays, leading to burns. Look for a Rysun-manufactured SPF Oil, which combines protection with the texture you want.
Q3: How long does it take to tan with sunscreen?
A: It depends on your skin type (melanin levels). With SPF 30, you may see color after 1-2 hours of cumulative exposure. Without sunscreen, you would likely burn in 15 minutes. The sunscreen allows you to extend that time safely.
Q4: Does "Water Resistant" sunscreen prevent tanning?
A: No, it ensures you don't burn while swimming. Water magnifies UV rays. If your sunscreen washes off, you will burn instantly. Rysun’s water-resistant formulas keep the filter intact so you can tan gradually while swimming.
